Step 1: Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)

Once you’ve completed your CBT, you can pursue a full license, depending on your age and the type of motorcycle you’d like to ride. Here’s an overview of the three main categories:
A1 Licence (17+ years)
You can obtain an A1 licence if you’re at least 17 years old. This allows you to ride a 125cc motorcycle without L-plates and carry passengers. You’ll need to pass the Motorcycle Theory Test, followed by the Module 1 and Module 2 Practical Tests.

If you’re 19 or older, the A2 licence allows you to ride larger motorcycles up to 35kW (47BHP). The A2 licence is an excellent choice if you plan on upgrading to a Category A licence in the future.

Category A Licence (21+ years with Progressive Access or 24+ years Direct Access)
A full Category A licence permits you to ride any size of motorcycle. You can obtain this licence at 21 if you’ve held an A2 licence for two years, or at 24 if you go through the Direct Access Scheme (DAS). Like the other licences, this category requires you to pass the Motorcycle Theory Test, and Modules 1 and 2 of the Practical Test.

Preparing with the Highway Code and practising hazard perception skills can significantly improve your chances of passing. You’ll need to pass this test before you can book your practical exams.
Step 4: Module 1 and Module 2 Practical Tests
After completing the theory test, it’s time to focus on the practical exams:
